Standing in Your Light: The Touch of Love
Introduction
The Touch of Love exercise evolved out of something that I used to do when I would find myself in an energetic situation that was troubling. If I was out in public or I was in a meeting or a group or in a situation where the subtle energies felt turbulent or for one reason or another I felt a bit under siege, I discovered that if I reached out and touched something and put my attention on a flow of subtle energy moving out from me that that helped to ground me and it helped to dissipate whatever impact I might be feeling at that time.
Then I began to realize, as I would do this practice, that there was a good deal more to it than just being a kind of emergency application. In fact, it was a way of establishing connection and affirming connection between myself and the life in the environment.
With the Touch of Love, several things are going on. It can be a form of protection for us, a way of grounding our energy, a way of being generative rather than too receptive and overly sensitive; but it can also be a way of fulfilling our capacity to participate in the flow of sacred uplift, the flow of sacredness that seeks to empower and enable every form of life, every form of manifestation and incarnation of the sacred presence to unfold and to fulfill whatever potentials it holds. It’s a way of connecting with the subtle environment around us and it’s a way of opening ourselves into communion with this great chain of being and this transmission of vital energies.
The Touch of Love exercise affirms our capacity as a generative source.
The love that we’re pouring out, the vitality, the caring, the blessing that is pouring out into our surroundings is coming from us; we are initiating it and it’s coming out of our sovereignty, it’s coming out of the field of life and the field of subtle energy that we hold within our incarnational system.
The Exercise
Close your eyes and enter into the theater of your heart and mind, into that inner space where imagination dwells and where you open out into connection with the subtle environment, the spiritual environment, the sacred environment around you and within you.
I would like you to direct your attention to that part of your physical self that you associate with your capacity to generate love. For most of us, it will be in our heart center, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be there–it could be in your head, in your throat, wherever you feel you touch into the presence of love in your life, that place in you from which you generate a flow of loving energy.
In that place, be aware of your power to be a source of love, love that blesses, love that empowers, love that seeks out the highest good of that towards which it is directed, love that uplifts, love that connects.
Feel all the parts of you–your soul, your mind, your emotions, your body, your energy field–all those parts coming together in this place where love dwells and in that place rejoicing that you are a wellspring of that love, that you are a source of it, and that you can bring it into the world.
As you touch into this source of love within yourself, feel the energy of this love beginning to flow out and down your arms and into your hands, where it pools at the end of your fingers and feel this love flowing unobstructedly from its source within yourself, powered by your intent and radiating with power, pulsing with power at the ends of your fingers.
Now open your eyes and see something that is immediately within your field of touch (it doesn’t matter what it is), and reach out and touch it.
This energy that is pooling at the tips of your fingers, that is flowing from your inner source of love down your arms into your hands and fingers, flows out as a pool to surround that which you’re touching. You are not pushing it into that which you are touching, you’re not forcing it to do anything, but you’re making a pool of this loving energy available, like a mist surrounding, enfolding, and embracing that which you’re touching. You invite the life within that which you are touching to partake of and participate in this pool of love which you are offering. This love uplifts, it nourishes, it empowers, it heightens the energy and consciousness of that which is evolving within the form that you are touching.
Pay attention to what happens between you and that which you are touching. You are not forcing anything upon it, but you are inviting it into a relationship with you through the love that you are offering. What do you feel? What is its response?
Keeping your hands on that which you are touching and keeping the love flowing towards that which you are touching, become aware that you also are being touched, that something much larger than yourself is touching you. You don’t have to name what that is. We can simply call it the hand of God, though it could take many forms. It could be one of your pit crew, it could be a local deva or angel, it could be the angel of your house, it could be the angel of the city in which you live, it could be a deva overlighting the area where you live. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that just as you reach out to touch what is in your environment, you in turn are being touched by those who reach out to you, who force nothing upon you, but surround you with a pool of their love and their presence and their energy from which you may draw what you need.
Just as you are aware of the love flowing from your inner source through your arms and hands into a companion in your environment, a life that you can bless, so be aware that at the other end you are being touched and blessed by someone or something higher up the chain of transmission, able to source energies and blessings not yet available to you or to me, but offering those to us to heighten, to empower, and to bless us just as we do that with the things in our world.
What does this feel like?
Now bring your hands back into your lap. Let them relax there and feel your energy flowing back into yourself, into the wholeness of you, into your sovereignty, and just take a further moment to feel yourself being touched, that something greater than you is reaching out to touch you with love.
The Touch of Love is a universal practice. We are touched all through our days by beings known and unknown to us, but who are part of the great chain of life and of evolution, the chain of revelation of the presence of the sacred. When we practice the Touch of Love, we are affirming our presence, our part, and our participation in that lineage, in that chain of transmission, in that universal blessing of life to life.
