Join Sarah Bush and Maryn Spangler in an exploration of the creative process, our generative ‘creator’ identity and Incarnational Spirituality. This workshop will be an opportunity to engage with your own creative essence, explore how to get your creative juices flowing, and develop your imagination muscles.
description
The universe is constantly creating itself. When we create, we’re tapping into and merging with the overarching creative rhythm that is life itself. To make art—or be creative in any way—is to be a part of that intrinsic, infinite, creative pulse.
Creativity and the imagination are also core elements of Incarnational Spirituality. And yet, many people feel separate from the act of creating, don’t perceive themselves as creative, or get stuck in the search for creative flow. Which is why we’re offering a free hands-on webinar on the creative process and our creative identity, led by mixed-media artist and I.S. practitioner Sarah Bush, with support from Maryn Spangler.
Bring your art supplies and an open mind as we explore how to use the art-making process to align with creative flow, get your generative juices flowing, and consciously expand how you can use your imagination. No experience or artistic ability required.
Using a simple prompt method, Sarah will lead you through creating several mixed media pages. Please bring at least 5 pieces of paper - 3 for the art-making, 2 for making messes. Printer paper can work, but you might have an easier time if you get yourself a sketchbook at the art or office supply store. (If you take that plunge, consider getting one for “mixed media” instead of “drawing” or “sketching” because the paper is more robust.)
If all you have is a ballpoint pen or a set of colored pencils—that’s fine! But please also scrounge up a pair of scissors and some glue—a glue stick can be great, or a bottle of Elmer’s. (Easier types of glue for collage to use than Elmer’s would be Mod Podge or—less smelly— “fluid matte medium.” All available at a craft store.)
Think about ways you can add color—paint, a stamp pad, magic markers, maybe a beet?
What do you own that you could print or stamp with—a rubber stamp, a potato, a textured object you could add ink or paint to and then ‘stamp’ onto something else.
Also, it could be fun for you to start collecting things ahead of time for class—junk mail envelopes in a color you like or with an image that strikes you. Bits you find on the ground when you are taking a walk—a leaf, a piece of thread or a chewing gum wrapper. Old photos. Printed out photos you’ve taken on your phone. Pages from old books you don’t want anymore. Receipts. Pretty tissue paper from a gift. These will be our collage materials.
If you do have different types of art supplies, please bring them, because even though we’re not so much “making art” as “experiencing art-making,” the more we have to play with, the merrier.
This workshop is about engaging with your own creativity, exploring how to get your creative juices flowing, and developing your imagination muscles. We’ll treat this time together as an opportunity to connect to ourselves in the moment as creators, generators, explorers.
This free event will be recorded and available indefinitely in your Learning Library.
