Overview
Journey Into Fire is a book by David Spangler describing the innate sacredness of the human incarnation. This course, Journey Into Fire I, is emergent from the book as the first step in building the experience of the teachings of Incarnational Spirituality (IS) and is the foundation for all of Lorian’s IS classes.

What if our physical, material existence was not something that cuts us off from the Sacred, but a portal to knowing Spirit even more intimately? What do people mean when they talk about the “God within”?
When we look for the sacred outside of ourselves, we miss a huge piece of the puzzle. The best of spiritual teachings lead us to the knowledge that the sacred is within us and is part of our fundamental being.
Incarnational Spirituality enables you to claim an important part of yourself, a sense of belonging in the world – a sense of being at home in your humanity. Being here is not a punishment we have to transcend. Rather, being in a body is kind of the joyful point. To be incarnate is to be a source of radiance and love through the medium of the physical worldly self and not in spite of it.
This class explores these concepts in ways intended to realign the way you engage with your life, to introduce a lived experience of the sacredness that is your birthright and your nature. Through imaginal practices, you will discover within yourself:
Sovereignty - a sense of identity and agency, a sacred note that you yourself bring into the world, anchored in your body but not restricted to it. In knowing your sovereignty, your foundations are strong and you know your spiritual worth.
Presence – you yourself are a sacred presence, a being made of Gaia and nature, of humanity, of soul and of the sacred that is within. When you stand in your sacred presence you affirm that you are born from, and belong within, every layer of the subtle ecologies of this world and beyond.
Self-Light – the light that you as a sacred presence in the world generate as naturally as breathing. This self-light is not channeled through you by a divine source but is light that you radiate simply by existing.
Journey Into Fire I offers a transformational experience designed to evoke a gentle identity shift and realignment of spirit which will enable you to claim your agency, heal deep wounds around power, step beyond the usual reactive patterns, and discover in yourself a willing choice to honor the sacred in yourself and in all around you.
Course Format
Using the book, Journey Into Fire, by David Spangler, as our launchpad, this class explores the foundations of Incarnational Spirituality - the nature of your sacred self, and how to stand in this presence in your daily activities and choices. A PDF copy of the book, Journey Into Fire, is included upon registration, and soft-cover editions are available in the Lorian bookstore.
The first requirement is to read the book. The conceptual structure for the class and the introduction to the language of Incarnational Spirituality are held within this material.
Our work together will give you an active experience of exploring your own incarnational light with readings, online discussions, webinar sessions, and downloadable guided experiences.
Each week, we will explore an exercise/practice that strengthens one of our innate capacities to manifest the light of our sacred self. Online discussion and six live and recorded webinar sessions will expand this personal practice.
Twice a week, a new written lesson is presented in the online classroom with topics that support the book learning. Each lesson has a written and audio file of a practice/exercise to offer an experience of that topic. It is recommended to do the exercises more than once.
It is also helpful to write your reflections on the exercise experiences in the space provided on the site and to read what insights others in the class have shared. Discussions are encouraged and offer great enrichment for all.
All webinars are recorded and available for listening at any time after the class session.

Class Facilitator: Julia Spangler
Julia Spangler is the President of the Board of the Lorian Association. She is ordained in IS, and teaches online classes for Lorian as well as Parenting classes for local preschool parents. She lived in the Findhorn community in Scotland for two years, where she met her husband, David, and others with whom she co-founded Lorian. She lives in Issaquah, WA with David and is grateful their four adult children and two grandchildren live nearby. Julia rejoices in the mystery and beauty of our world.
